SUMMARY:Sophie Straat
DESCRIPTION:“A singer from Amsterdam who protests through sentimental songs, recorded a duet with Goldband, and kicked off Pukkelpop two years ago with a strong statement against Reuzegom”, that’s how HUMO announced Sophie Straat for her performance at Boterhammen In Het Park this summer.\nStraat got off to a flying start in The Netherlands: she won a prestigious Edison for her debut EP’T Is Niet Mijn Schuld (2020), and her debut album Smartlap Is Niet Dood (2023) earned nominations for 3FM Awards, Edisons and the Amsterdam Prize for the Arts. The EP Gebroken Spiegels (2024) consists of one long song, recorded with the Metropole Orkest, and according to De Groene Amsterdammer it is of a “rare grand scale and daring”.\nIn just a few years, Sophie Straat has become “the figurehead of the socially engaged generation of twentysomethings” (Volkskrant) and her music has collected more than fifteen million streams. She has impressed audiences with her band at festivals from ITGWO to Lowlands and Pukkelpop, but also with sold-out club tours and her own festival Protestfest; which has been held for three years in a row at a sold-out Paradiso in Amsterdam (the next edition is on Saturday 28 March2026).\nAlongside her music, Sophie is also a multi-disciplinary artist who creates artwork, photos and films, such as the short film Mooier Als Je Lacht, that revolves around three album songs. Sophie Straat is here to say something with her protest songs, with the ultimate goal of bringing about change. Because the world sucks and is only getting suckier, but “the revolution is unstoppable” (De Standaard).\nHer second album Wie de fak is Sophie Straat? is to be released on October 3, but her new single Let me tell you something ’bout my country will be out on August 29, together with the presale for this concert.\n
