They are back! Kentucky-based post-hardcore quintent, Picturesque, has returned with their highly anticipated six-track EP, IYKYK (If You Know, You Know), three years after their 2020 album, Do You Feel O.K??. With almost a decade of musical journey behind them, this EP showcases their evolution as a band, venturing far beyond their rock band roots.
Picturesque first burst onto the scene in 2014 with their self-titled debut, and since then, they’ve been crafting their unique sound. IYKYK may well be their most vulnerable and honest record to date, offering a glimpse into the personal experiences of the band members.
The EP kicks off with “Strange Habits”, a track that immediately grabs your attention. Kyle Hollis’s smooth vocals take center stage, and as the song progresses, it becomes evident that Picturesque is experimenting with a captivating blend of pop, hip-hop, and electronic elements. Hollis’s vocal style may remind listeners of Kellin Quinn from Sleeping With Sirens, setting a high bar for what’s to come.
The EP’s third track, “Hopeless”, stands out as one of the rawest and most compelling offerings. Here, Hollis’s vocals take on a rap-like quality as he delves into deeply personal themes, including his own childhood experiences. The fusion of hip-hop beats, synths, and post-hardcore guitars makes this track a standout moment.
Their EP maintains a glorious flow throughout its duration. “Break It All” leads seamlessly into “Waterson West”, which takes us on a dreamlike journey through electro-pop nostalgia. The influence of bands like Jimmy Eat World adds a pinch of sweetness to the already captivating sound.
The closing track “Dance With the Devil” is a departure from the high-energy post-hardcore rock that Picturesque is known for. This song dives into a darker subject matter, showcasing the band’s storytelling skills. It addresses the painful theme of watching someone battle addiction and the profound impact it has on those around them. It serves as a fitting conclusion to an EP that is unafraid to explore emotional depth.
For fans of Issues, Sleeping With Sirens, and Holding Absence, IYKYK is a must-listen EP that showcases Picturesque’s growth as a band and their willingness to explore new musical horizons. The band seasmlessly blend genres, fusing pop, hip-hop and post-hardcore elements into this captivating sonic experience called IYKYK.
