Review
PRBLMS by NOT A TOY is an exploration that, while facing some challenges, manages to offer moments of genuine creativity and musical flair. It’s quietly making its way into our playlists, and there’s something intriguing about it.
NOT A TOY strives to break free from genre constraints. While the album hasn”t received a massive industry push, it’s clear that there’s a unique artistic vision behind it. The alt-trap elements shine brightly on tracks like ‘grown folk problems‘ and ‘Nervous‘. But the album also surprises with its pop-influenced moments, such as the slithering horn line on ‘Soul Slippin‘ and subtle flourishes in ‘Dementor’, showcasing the band’s versatility.
Although the album faces some challenges in maintaining consistency, it’s not without its merits. ‘DIE W/U’ attempts to blend different elements, and while it may not hit the mark perfectly, it reflects a willingsness to experiment. NOT A TOY’s attempt to break boundaries is commendable, even if it brings them closer to conventional alt-pop at times. Brandon Hoog’s unique vocal delivery adds a distinctive touch, and the occasional quirky moments.
PRBLMS may not redefine the genre, but it offers a refreshing take on alt-pop. In a musical landscape that’s constantly evolving, NOT A TOY’s willingness to experiment with creativity. By the year’s end, PRBLMS might not dominate the charts, but it’s sure to leave a positive imprint on those who take the time to explore its nuances.
