When the tragic news came out a few months ago that guitarist Ryan Siew had died at the age of twenty-six, a shock wave was sweeping through the metalcore world. Just a day before Ryan’s death, Polaris played at Graspop, where the band members gave a taste of their new album alongside songs from ‘The Death of Me’ and ‘The Mortal Coil’. Although ‘Fatalism’ takes on a whole new dimension with its sudden and sad loss, the Australians exude a certain strength and resilience that simply grabs you by the neck. Looking to the future, Polaris’ light is anything but extinguished: the powerful and haunting single ‘Overflow’ is ideal proof of that.
