Whitney
“Whitney’s songs about love and heartbreak are as touching as a child blowing bubbles. De Standaard reviewed debut album Light Upon the Lake with these appropriate words six years ago. Since then, indie pop heaven has opened up for Julien Ehrlich and Max Kakacek. Their third album SPARK has become a gem, in which they deal with the emotionally charged past two years of lockdowns and relationship break-ups.
To record the new album, the Chicago duo built a replica of their log cabin in the woods of Portland in their studio. There they retreated between midnight and dawn to give their inspiration free rein. The result is a slightly psychedelic album bathed in melancholy. Unlike their previous work, SPARK sounds richer, more diverse, more mature too. Julien and Max add to their dreamy soundscapes frivolous drum loops, sparkling piano riffs and here and there even a touch of disco. Whitney’s new sound is born.
SPARK is also an ode to the intense friendship of two like-minded souls. Julien and Max needed the album, and the time they spent together to make it, to turn a page in their lives. That intense friendship also manifests itself live. With Whitney, there are two top musicians on stage who inspire and enrich each other and thus succeed in spreading a unique sound like a warm blanket over the audience.
