Charles sold out the Ancienne Belgique!

Thursday 20 October. Last show of the tour. The climax of this tour: Charles had to the guts to book a show at the legendary and non-official best venue in Belgium: the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels. Only she booked the venue but she also sold it out (or at 99.99%)! Throwback back to the biggest night of his career… so far!

The last couple of weeks, she travelled all around the country and also the neighbours with a show at La Cigale in Paris during the MaMa, the biggest corporate event in music industry from our French neighbours. We saw her playing an intimate show at the Trix Club a few days before in front of only 150 people… It was such a surprise to see so few people showed up to see the winner of The Voice Belgium in 2019! One more proof that there’s still a real separation between the French and Dutch part of the country in terms of culture (and many more things). But she’s still at the beginning of her promising career as the pandemic closed everything during almost 2 years in Belgium.

To open this show, Charles invited another promising act: Rori. Some people knew her from her previous project, the duo Beffroi, which allows her to play on big festivals like Dour, Les Ardentes but also on the best venues from the country like Botanique and… the Ancienne Belgique. A short but great first experience so! In 2020, she released her first single Gonna Get Mine followed by another, then another and then some great shows. The day before this show opening for Charles, she headlined her own special show at the Cirque Royal Club. Her pop sound embraces very nicely some soul, rn’b and pop-rock vibes. During 30 minutes, she’ll share with us known songs and unreleased singles to be officially released early next year. Spoiler alert: we can say we are lucky tonight as Charles also played for us a unreleased new single!

Between the songs, Rori always had time to tell some jokes or anecdotes. Or tips for other singers she’s learned: don’t eat right before a show! Good advice, we won’t forget it. Like we won’t forget her show, her fresh and enjoyable music. Same for the audience: even if more than half of the venue is empty, the people there really enjoyed her show. It’s great to see so many young artists with so much talent like Rori or Mia Lena killing it right now!

CHARLES: BE A STAR BUT STAY YOURSELF!

After a 30-minutes change over, it’s time to welcome the start of the night on stage: Charlotte Foret aka Charles! Tonight is the big night, so is the set-list: 24 songs! And it could have been 25 if one song has been removed on the paper set-list. She played in full her album “Until We Meet Again” (11 songs) and in full her debut EP “Falling While Rising”. Basically all the songs she’s ever released! Added a few covers and unreleased songs: tonight was show special and she makes sure it was whole night long!

Starting with Until We Meet Again, we are hypnotized from the first notes and sent to her world. Supported by a great light show and – obviously at the AB – a beautiful sound, we can enjoy all the songs played. The crowd is a still a bit asleep but will slowly waking up to give to Charles and her musicians the support and energy they deserved. Tonight, even if a couple of tickets were still available when the doors opened, about 2000 people were there to sold out the place and see for the first time – or more, like us – the new young pop-star from Belgium.

All of songs sounded like a hit: Far Gone, Anymore, He Knows… or Weaknesses. A song she co-writed but Alioth. And first surprise of the evening: he’s there so sing it live with her. As great live as on the album, this first featuring helped the crowd to warm up a bit!

The deep voice of Charles remind us sometimes another very young lady who has some success: Billie Eilish. Without being a copycat at all and with both different music universes, it’s just easy to make a slight rapprochement. It’s the same for everything in the world: we always need to compare something with another to place it somewhere. Tonight, she proved us she also is a fan of her – like us – with a beautiful and unexpected cover of No Time To Die, the James Bond’s theme singing by Billie Eilish and released for the movie called obviously “No Time To Die”. A song she played alone on piano, like she did also for the previous song Didn’t Get To Say Goodbye.

She’s full of surprises tonight: a very long set-list, some covers (Billie Eilish but also from her favorite band, Nothing But Thieves), a new song Hate Me For It she played for the second time (the first time was in Paris 6 days before), some guests on stage (Alioth followed later by Delta), some songs played with her full band, in duo of her guitarist and sometimes alone. During 90 minutes, we saw everything she was capable of!

Set-list: Until We Meet Again, Far Gone, As Good As Them, The Fall, Weaknesses, Hate Me For It, Anymore, Motives, He Knowns, Didn’t Get To Say Goodbye, No Time To Die, You Still Think You’re Right, Coward, Without You, Dear God, Miss You When You’re There, Wasted Time, Particles, Riddle, Systematic, Be My Guest, Never Fair.
