Randy Newman
An Evening With Randy Newman
In 2015, genius songwriter Randy Newman sold out the main hall of De Roma twice for what might have been the best concerts of that season. In 2018, he unfortunately had to cancel his two sold-out concerts and then corona and surgery followed. But in the spring of 2023, he will finally return to De Roma! With his impressive repertoire of songs – ranging from his unforgettable film scores to heart-rending and satirical hits – Randy Newman is one of the greatest songwriters to have ever existed. The general public embraces the American singer-songwriter for his sharp, touching and sometimes sarcastic lyrics. His lyrics are full of irony and within one verse can unabashedly make you laugh and (a little later) suddenly grab you by the throat.
Randy Newman started his career as a songwriter behind the scenes, writing many hits for other artists. In the seventies he broke through with his own hits ‘Short People’ and ‘Rider In The Rain’. The albums ‘Little Criminal’, the controversial ‘Good Old Boys’ and the in 2008 released ‘Harps and Angels’ also became worldwide successes.
Since the 1980s, Newman has also been focusing on composing film music and writing soundtracks, such as Toy Story (with the beautiful You’ve Got A Friend In Me), A Bug’s Life and Monsters Inc. Two Academy Awards for Best Original Song, twenty Oscar nominations, six Grammy Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame make Newman one of the most successful American singer-songwriters ever. By now he has more than 35 albums to his name and an immense repertoire.
Randy Newman has been perfecting his absurdist and satirical songs for over 50 years now. On his latest album, ‘Dark Matter’, he shows that his unique universe is still fresh.
